Writing’ will make you a terrible Copywriter🤐…

Many months ago, I battled one of the greatest career struggles as a content and copywriter. I was a part of this project as a writer and I got to a point where I felt stuck, starved of ideas. Gosh! It was bad.

For someone who found it super easy to COOK creative ideas and weave them into words and narratives, this particular project had me hooked for months, nudging me slowly but surely to the shores of self doubt; questioning my abilities and knowledge of being a creative writer.

I glanced at my previous works and felt like a fraud. My thoughts went wild, “Juwon, are you sure you worked on that project? Maybe you’ve just lost your steam and yada yada yadaaaa.”

I activated my inner drone to get a bird’s-eye view of the situation,

and I spotted a round black hole that needed some filling up.

The truth is, I had been working like a horse, squeezing out various flavours of my creative juices — Carrot, Apple, all sort, dishing out amazing creative ideas and feeling fly, BUT i forgot to do something

— keep filling the cup.

While I was constantly putting my best works out; writing,

working on briefs, I neglected the subtle but necessary acts of reading, divulging information and scooping other creative perspectives.

Now I’d like to think you get the drift of my headline😉 cause writing will make you a terrible copywriter if that is the ONLY thing you do.

One thing I knew for sure was that the hinges of my mind were rusty, desperately needing some lubrication. The passion I had for my job needed to be rekindled again. I was in a desperate need to save myself from me.

So I opted on a quest to get myself back on track,

started to read more, not just about copywriting but about the places i love, the animals i love, the food i love, i even went back to my my favourite childhood author Enid Blyton. Yay! (Holla, if you’re a fan😁).

I made rest a priority and created intentional time outside of WORK for myself. So far, these have been paying off a great deal.

The thing about reading and checking out other creative works is that it is easier to see everything you do as perfect when it’s only your eyes that see them but when you study other creative work, you learn and unlearn, enrich yourself, steal, yes STEAL things from here and there to make your work richer.

Don’t be like me who had to hit rock bottom before getting back up. Write, read, play, eat information, have fun, STEAL from other people’s creative wells — just keep filling your cup as much as you empty it!

All my love❤️,

The Scribe.
