According to an ancient Kannada stone inscription discovered in the Nageshwara Temple in Begur, Bangalore, the city's history began around 890. Kempé Gowdā, a feudal lord of the Vijayanagara Empire, built a mud fort in 1537, which is regarded as the origin of contemporary Bangalore and its earliest neighborhoods, known as pétés, which are still in existence. Kempe Gowda declared independence with the fall of the Vijayanagara Empire; in 1638, he was defeated by a sizable Adil Shahi Bijapur army, and Bangalore came under the rule of Shahaji Bhonsle as a jagir, eventually becoming his capital. Later, Bangalore was taken by the Mughals and sold to Maharaja Devaraja Wodeyar II of the Mysore Kingdom. Bangalore came under Haider Ali's rule when he took over the kingdom.
