The live action adaptation of Walt Disney Studios first full-length animated film stars Rachel Zegler, Gal Gadot, Andrew Burnap, and Ansu Kabia. Zegler stuns as Snow White. Her melodious voice behind Disney classics and new songs like “Waiting on A Wish” greets viewers like a warm hug. The soundtrack and score really provide the audience with a way to escape into the Disney magic that is known and loved for an hour and forty-five minutes.
Gal Gadot’s beauty as Evil Queen must be commended as it looks like she was plucked from the animated version that was released in February of 1938. Gadot’s portrayal happens to be sassier while putting an emphasis on having the last word. She’s not to be taken as seriously as her predecessor, which is shown with the song choices selected for her. One important change, that does not favor Gadot in any manner, is the addition of songs for the evil queen. The original Evil Queen, voiced by Lucille La Verne, did not have any songs which added to the more serious portrayal of the character.
The seven dwarves in this rendition were created using CGI rather than hiring actors with dwarfism. It’s tough to determine exactly how many working actors with have dwarfism there are but some who have achieved success in the industry include Kenny Baker, Warwick Davis, and Peter Dinklage. Disney did state that the reason for not casting actors as dwarves and utilizing CGI instead was to attempt to avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original film and they wanted to take a different approach with the seven dwarves in this adaptation.
While keeping that in mind, it is key to recognize that the dwarves live in a magical forest. With the use of GCI to create the dwarves adds to their magical appearance. The way they walk, express emotion, sing and work all add to the magic of a children’s film. Most importantly children who have seen the movie, have enjoyed it and loved the dwarves.
Disney’s ‘Snow White’ has several animated to live-action changes, at the heart of the film the core of the story is still there. There is family, a sense of belonging, learning to be understanding when you have different opinions, and fairness. This adaption has been met with criticism that many would not deem as fair compared to the adaptions released prior. Regardless, Gal Gadot is the Evil Queen, and she looks glorious while gliding around with her cape. Rachel Zegler shines with her rendition of classic melodies as Snow White.
She is, indeed, the fairest of them all.
