Percy Jackson and the Olympians

A book to film adaptation...again?

Another attempt at an adaptation of Rick Riordan's original book series that was first published during the summer of 2005.

Unlike its predecessor, the tv show aims to stick more to the source material which according to viewers, has paid off.

Percy Jackson & the Olympians hails as Disney+'s biggest debut and top five season premiere during 2023 between both Disney + and Hulu.

Welcome Demi Gods.

Walker Scobell, known from Netflix's 'The Adam's Project, portray's Percy Jackson. This time with blonde curls, and known by the end of the series as being Percy 'about that action' Jackson. Walker's performance as Percy is a wonder ode to the book as he is closer to book Percy's age and mindset.

Leah Sava Jeffries portray's Annabeth Chase, a role that has been met with much love and support from author Rick Riordan and movie Annabeth, Alexandra Daddario herself. One may recognize Leah from 2022's 'Beast' or 2022's 'Something from Tiffany's' from Prime Video. When asked about Leah's casting, both Rick and Walker stated that they knew when they saw her audition that she was the perfect Annabeth.

Last, but certainly not least, is Aryan Simhadri as Grover Underwood who viewers may recognize from the 2022 adaptation of 'Cheaper by the Dozen'. Some may see Grover as the "sidekick" or the "third wheel" but this adaptation makes it clear that he is not one to be discarded. Everyone needs a friend like Grover.

What makes a monster a monster?

While the relationship between Gods and Demi Gods is played across eight episodes, there are a few monsters introduced with a new interpretation of the most well known monster of them all.

The Fury, The Minotaur, The Chimera, and Cerberus just to name a few but the "monster" that was able to capture my heart rather then turn it to stone, was no other then Medusa herself.

In this telling of Medusa's story, the "how" of her curse remains the same while the "why" is explained in a way that is appropriate for a TV- PG rating but changed in an attempt to have the viewer see Annabeth but in a similar situation in the very same episode.

The ability to tell Medusa's story, serve it justice, create a 'lightbulb' moment when Annabeth has a similar experience with her mother that shows just how spiteful the Gods can be, while not making the viewer completely detest Poseidon... that is a job well done in my book.

Jessica Parker Kennedy portrays Medusa beautifully and may leave the viewer wishing that episode three was just a little bit longer.

What is the better adaption?

The original book? The 1st and 2nd film adaptation? The TV show?

The answer is not as simple as you may think.

It all depends on the viewer and what type of experience they want to have while watching the new show.

To me, it's simple. If you want to experience the book in the way you read and imagined it, then read the book.

If you liked the films, no matter that they took several liberties with the source material then watch the movies.

If you liked the books, don't mind a few changes here and there, but want to watch something that is more book accurate then the film was, feel free to log into Disney+ and enjoy Percy Jackson and the Olympians.

When are we 'sea'ing season two?

Grab your life jackets and have a seat on this ship! The renewal announcement was released after it was announced that between Hulu and Disney +, season one was streamed over 110 million hours. A release date hasn't been announced but most viewers expect season two to be released at some point during 2025.

Get ready for an adventure, a wedding for the masses, a tense reunion and The Sea of Monsters. 😉
